It is a well-known fact that thousands of Americans will only darken the door of a church on two Sundays-Christmas and Easter. Gospel Light Baptist Church, after prayerful consideration and planning, chose to host the first annual Eggstraordinary Easter in April 2009. In order to ensure a successful weekend, countless hours were spent carefully planning and preparing. We coordinated the event with our city’s Parks & Recreation Department, and solicited sponsorships from area businesses.
A special “mystery egg” was used to market the event. Church members volunteered to stuff thousands of plastic Easter eggs with a ticket for the weekend’s events. Each egg was then placed in a plastic door-hanger bag, and Sunday school classes took hundreds of bags and hung them on doors throughout the community. The eggs-combined with the event billboard on a busy street, the numerous ads in the newspaper and on the radio, and the posters displayed in area businesses-proved to be a highly effective means of communicating event details.
As parents and their children arrived at a local park the Saturday before Easter, they were greeted by registration tables, Easter bunny photographers, bounce houses, games and face painting galore. Each attendee was given a free hot dog lunch; and concessions such as snow cones, popcorn, and nachos were also made available. Of course, the main draw for the crowd was the 20,000-egg hunt that took place! After sufficient time was given for the activities, all attendees were seated around a stage and treated to a 20-minute Gospel concert by members of our church. Pastor Capaci preached the salvation message from the Word of God, and we saw many come forward for salvation! Praise the Lord!
Attendees were encouraged to attend the Sunday morning services at Gospel Light, and we saw many who did just that. Sunday morning was dedicated to a special selection of Christ-honoring music, after which Dr. Capaci was able to bring another message on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The total attendance for the weekend’s Easter celebration was over 4,500 people, which is more than double our previous high attendance! The follow-up opportunities are abundant, as church members take the Saturday registration cards and connect with fellow residents of our community.
